They’ll Make You Scream: An Interview with Eronoi

“They don’t want me to make money off of sex music.”

When I first heard Eronoi, it was at the Harold’s Coffee Lounge gig last month (iykyk.) As I heard the opening riffs from their guitars, the rush of power through their vocals transforming the limited space into an almost arena-presence, I knew this was a band I did not want to miss.

With my luck, I managed to get them to sit down with me in a barely-lit Starbucks near the open road of the Turnpike, and tell me their story.

This is Andrian, Bella, Aidan, and Nico. They are Eronoi.

“What’s the story behind Eronoi? How did you guys come to be?”

The band is positioned in a semi circle around me, our table littered with half-eaten pastries and half-empty cups.

Andrian leans back in his chair and a smile comes across his face. “We were thinking about band names for a really long time. It was super annoying to think about.”

In between bits and pieces from the band, they paint the picture of coming up with their name and how they went back and forth on whether to come up with a serious name or something without much thought behind it. Eventually, Eronoi– which in completion is Erotic Noise– came from the mix of the two. Something wild, but with a touch of avant garde.

Aidan and Andrian reminisce about meeting in high school, their idea of creating a band, and how they both had no clue how to play their instruments but went out to buy their instruments that same week. “I always thought I’d end up being a producer, not someone who signs or plays the instrument.” mentions Aidan.

Bella had played guitar for a bit before joining, and once the guys mentioned the idea to her, she was all in. “I had always wanted to be in a band.” she says, and talks about meeting the guys and jumping in headfirst into playing bass– something she had never played before– and learning through experience.

Nico was actually the only member to have experience in being in a band, and when Aidan and Andrian mentioned their need for a drummer, Nico was their guy. “What I wanted to do with being in this band was to just let it happen. Let it grow in its own way.” he says, and remarks how much he’s liking the band’s sound and what they’re producing together.

“If you could hang out with one musician dead or alive who would it be?”

Aidan picks out guitar-extraordinaire Jimi Hendrix. “When I think of a superstar, that’s him. The sort of conclusions he brought to his own music, it was kinda alien.” He brings up how he would want to talk to him to try and understand his thought process.

Bella goes with Kim Gordon, riot grrrl influencer and bass player for Sonic Youth. “You can tell she’s genuine with what she believes and with what she’s made.” She goes on to compare how growing up she was shy and kept to herself, and then watching an interview with Gordon acting the same way makes her think the two’s spirits would get along well.

Andrian would want to spend his time with Chief Keef. “I like his energy. He pushes out tons of music, and so much of it is good, and it doesn’t even feel like he’s trying.” To share a blunt or two, ask him some questions, that would definitely be an experience.

Nico’s answer was my favorite, because I too would pick this person in a heartbeat. “Robert Pattinson.” he says. “I’ve never heard his music, but I know he plays the guitar. He seems kinda dope.” That leads us into a mini Robert Pattinson conversation that I am more than happy to be involved in, and if anything, it makes me imagine that if they ever crossed paths, he would fit right in.

“What makes a good song to you guys?”

Making a song is hard enough, making a good song I can’t even begin to imagine where that process would begin. Or end.

“When it gets stuck in your head, I don’t think there’s much more to it.” says Andrian. “It’s got you thinking about it. It’s got you wanting to listen to it more. Or even if you hate it. Hate’s very closely related to love, so it’s still good.”

Aidan believes that a good song is something that comes from your bones. Something authentic. “If someone is not believing in their music, I don’t feel like that's them.”

“If you guys were to make the soundtrack for a movie, what would you want it to be about?”

Bella surprises me with how quickly she says “Slasher.” Aidan follows up with her, adding “Surreal horror.”

“But with a sexy vampire.” she adds, smiling while looking at her bandmates. I can’t help but think I know someone perfect for that role.

Andrian suggests adding comedy to the mix, and mentions that he thinks comedy and horror compliment each other well to make a good movie.

Nico would want to make it all a mockumentary. He would want to run around, camera in hand, and just film what’s happening. Surreal slasher with perfect comedic timing caught on grainy home video footage. Oh, also starring Robert Pattinson.

“Where do you go for inspiration?”

“Weed.” They all say almost instantaneously.

When talking about their lyrics and writing their songs, the band takes a lot of inspiration from their own lives and experiences they’ve lived. They mention, it can get boring and repetitive, but it's true to who they are and what they want to express. “I am so not subtle, that I use metaphors in all of my songs.” says Andrian.

“If you could use one word to describe the feeling of getting up on that stage and performing in front of people who dig your music, what would it be?”

Nico compares it to a drug. “It’s addicting. You don’t feel pain or anything.” If you’ve seen Nico on the drums, you can definitely tell that it looks like he’s feeling the rush in his veins.

Andrian admits its nerve wracking. And how can it not be? Playing in front of a live crowd that seems to be growing and growing by the minute. “People keep telling me it’s because I’m new. But I just get nervous.”

Bella says it’s surreal. She talks about the Harold's gig, “It wasn’t our first legit show, but it was a legit rock show that we played where it was really surreal to see people dance to our music.” Once again, iykyk, and it was definitely one for the books.

Aidan describes it as purifying. I ask him if it feels like a religious experience, and he says, “It feels like everything else going on in my life washes away.” It’s cleansing.

I could talk with them all night. They go on about what it's like to grow in the rock scene in South Florida; how crazy it is that they get to play with other bands and watch their crowds get bigger and scream their lyrics back to them and vibe to their music in mosh pits.

The future holds many promises for them, and I’m more than ready for their upcoming album to drop (hopefully sooner rather than later.) Eronoi, thank you for being the voice South Florida needs; we are all standing right behind you.

Eronoi is a South Florida-based rock band consisting of Aidan (guitarist/vocalist), Andrian (guitarist/vocalist), Bella (bass), and Nico (drums.)
